Prizewinners SHAKE Young Talent Innovation Festival create smart emergency button for events
Students designed ‘Event 112’ as the solution to increase safety when using alcohol and drugs goes bad

SHAKE Young Talent Innovation Festival was the playground for ten student teams. They each worked for 36 hours in a row to come up with the ultimate digital experience to be used during SENSATION and other events. The winning concept was Event 112. It is a plug-in for existing events to speed up first aid medical care. By pressing the button which has been integrated into existing festival apps, the emergency medical team present can pinpoint the attendee's exact location and offer immediate help. The app has to potential to save lives. The jury, including Henk van Raan (Amsterdam ArenA) and Duncan Stutterheim (ID&T), were very impressed by the idea and saw several applications immediately. Had it already been operational, it could have been used straight away during Sensation Dance Festival.

Shake Young Talent Innovation Festival

The SHAKE Young Talent Innovation Festival is a unique collaboration between Open-House and SpinAwards. It connects the festival & event scenes with the digital creative industry. Fifty students divided into ten teams worked almost non-stop for 36 hours in the Amsterdam ArenA stadium. The Challenge was to come up with innovative technology solutions within the 36 hours time limit that could improve experiences during events like Sensation. The students were guided by the coaches Marco Derksen from Upstream/Marketingfacts, Tom de Bruyne from Sue Amsterdam, Douwe Dirks from JWT International and Matthijs Roumen from Kaliber. On top of this, the students attended various lectures, including Gerald Been from Ubideo on the future of video streaming and Johan Voets from OKGO on the future of wearables at events.

Winner: Event 112

At the end of the second day the students presented their ideas in front of the professional panel of judges. The judges: Duncan Stutterheim (ID&T), Jesse van Doren(Innovation Holland), Brenda Munsterman (Sensation), Henk van Raan (Amsterdam ArenA) and Patrick Klink (RTL Nederland), evaluated all ten teams. The concepts were judged on creativity and innovation (50%), commercial feasibility (25%) and the presentation (25%). The ideas were extremely diverse: ranging from developments in the area of safety to making contact with the DJs. Nonetheless, the judges made a unanimous decision on the winner: Event 112. The students from team 10; Quincy Kools (17, Havo-T, Newman College) Marjolijn Vanderbosch (25, HBO Commercial Economics & Multimedia Design, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen) and Tim Kloppenburg (26, WO Social Psychology, Universiteit van Amsterdam) came up with the idea that enables First Aid givers to assist more rapidly when event attendees are in need of help.

Second and third place
Concepts Celebrace and Partyguard made it to the second and third places, respectively. Celebrace gives health insights to the visitors and the organisation by wearing a wristband. Partyguard is a smart wristband that can be a better solution for disposable wristbands at festival & events and includes other functions as opening lockers, making the perfect selfie and a track & trace option to locate your friends.

The Accelerator Programme

The winning team and the numbers two and three were given the opportunity to pitch their ideas in front of several important stakeholders during Amazing Monday (6th of July) in the Amsterdam ArenA Innovation Center. They are also allowed to pitch in the Open-House accelerator program. This gives them the opportunity to further develop their concept and launch it via the network of “launching customers” such as the Amsterdam ArenA and other program partners. The team of Event 112 were offered a voucher from Amsterdam ArenA which they can exchange to work for a week in the newly build Innovation Center and get help from all its partners.

SpinAwards & Open-House

Stephan Fellinger, Board Chairman SpinAwards:

“We are extremely proud of the collaboration between Open-House and SpinAwards. It’s a beautiful match because Dance & Digital have the same DNA: creativity, pioneering, technology, the urge to make the world a better place, and optimism. The first edition of SHAKE Young Talent Innovation Festival showed that innovation occurs when you mix these two worlds.”

Tom Engbers, Managing Director of Open House:

“The combination of Open-House and Spinawards really fits. We both focus on young talent. Through events like the SHAKE Young Talent Innovation Festival you can encourage young talent and give them the opportunity to develop themselves even better. There was a reason this first edition was held in Amsterdam Arena, as partner of Open-House. With the recently launched Innovation Center, the Amsterdam ArenA wants to be the showcase in the Netherlands in the field of smart and sustainable cities. The concepts developed here for the event industry are applicable everywhere. An event is a miniature city, a testing ground. What is possible at an event can be extrapolated to the real world. Let the event be your playground, the city your reality check…
