Communications startup MessageBird this week took over the SMS business of iBasis, a KPN subsidiary. With the acquisition the Amsterdam-based startup wants to expand its global reach in the messaging landscape.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Messagebird, founded in 2011, enables developers and companies to communicate via SMS, voice and chat through their APIs or web interface. It allegedly has over 10.000 customers in 60 countries.

"This acquisition accelerates our already rapid growth and strengthens our strategic position in global messaging", said CEO Robert Vis in the release. According to MessageBird's CMO Jorg Ruis, the startup showed a 50 percent annual growth rate for three years in a row.

Sydney and Shanghai

A couple of months ago the startup set up shop in San Francisco and Hong Kong, while it already was active in London, Hamburg and of course Amsterdam. Messagebird now opens new offices soon in Sydney and Shanghai as well.
